After you Install a Dash Cam (Standard Instructions), you can customize its operation and functionality from the camera settings (Settings () > Devices settings > Configuration > Cameras).
When you enable a dash cam setting from the Cameras Configuration settings, the setting applies to your entire fleet. However, most dash cam settings can also be customized for individual vehicles.
You can manage the following settings from the Cameras Configuration settings:

Video Recording and Storage: Customize recording settings to control when recording starts and stops, adjust video quality, manage audio recording, and modify camera recording preferences.

Trip Images: Configure how frequently trip images are captured and choose whether to enable driver-facing trip images.

Camera ID: Manage facial recognition options for identifying drivers and associating them to vehicle activity.
-
Live Streaming: Enable or disable live streaming and configure options such as audio and camera direction for outward-facing or inward-facing views.
-
Multi-Camera Engine Off Uptime: Define how long multi-camera systems continue recording after the engine is turned off.
You can adjust recording settings to optimize the dash cam’s functionality, including extending recording time when the vehicle is parked and enabling audio capture.
By default, dual-facing Samsara Dash Cams with AI capabilities record both driver-facing and road-facing footage. However, you can disable recording if needed to address driver privacy concerns and comply with regional data protection regulations, while still maintaining essential safety features. Samsara Dash Cams are designed to record video footage based on specific triggers and settings:

Motion Detection (Default): Records when motion is detected by the VG and stops 10 minutes after motion ceases.

Record on Engine State: Starts recording when the engine is running and stops when the engine turns off. For more details, see Record on Engine State.
To extend recording for either setting, adjust the Parking Mode setting in your Dash Cam Settings. For more detailed information about recording logic, see Dash Cam Recording Logic for Video and Images.
Audio recording is supported by all dash cams and internal multi-cameras. By default, audio recording is disabled. If your state or municipality allows for it, you can Enable Audio Recording alongside video capture. Audio recording begins only after you enable this setting and does not apply to any previous historical footage.
Because a portion of the dash cam recording capacity is used for audio storage, you reduce your video storage capacity when you enable audio recording. To see the distribution of dash cam storage when utilizing optional features, see Dash Cam Storage Capacity.
Available on CM3x series dash cams, Parking Mode extends recording by an additional 1 hour (default) beyond the standard 10 minutes. For example, if the Recording Window is set to 1 hour, the dash cam will record for a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes after a trip ends. You can customize the Parking Mode duration from 1 to 12 hours in 1-hour increments.

Audio: When Parking Mode is enabled, Audio Recording is captured only if the setting is activated for the vehicle.

Event Detection: When Parking Mode is active, automatic detection of Harsh Event Detection and AI Event Detection is disabled since these features require the vehicle to be on a trip. However, if footage is available, you can request it using the Video Retrieval Process.

Battery Health: The vehicle battery continues to power the dash cam after the vehicle is turned off. Therefore, Parking Mode is recommended only for vehicles with healthy batteries that are regularly driven. Longer recording times drain the battery faster than shorter ones. Third-Party Cameras: Cameras installed using the Samsara Camera Connector (HD or Standard) will only work with Parking Mode if the third-party camera is configured to receive power after the vehicle is turned off. If not, only the Samsara Dash Cam will record when the vehicle is off.
For CM33/CM34 Dash Cams, you can also configure the dash cam to display an LED when recording. For more information, see Dash Cam Recording Status Visibility for Drivers (CM33/CM34).
Samsara CM series Dash Cams continuously record audio and video based on Dash Cam Recording Logic for Video and Images and your configured settings. To modify dash cam settings to better suit the needs of your fleet, you can adjust the camera storage and video quality settings.

By default, a road-facing still image is uploaded at the start and end of every trip. If Periodic Trip Images are enabled, the dash cam also uploads a still image every few minutes to the Trip Timeline and Trip History.
For privacy concerns, inward-facing trip images for dual-facing cameras are disabled by default. To enable inward-facing trip images, see Enable Driver-Facing Trip Images
Camera ID uses facial recognition to associate vehicle activity with a driver. This feature is supported on dual-facing dash cams and is off by default. Before enabling the feature, you must obtain driver consent where required by law.
Camera ID begins assigning drivers after enough training images have been added through manual or other driver assignment methods.
Administrators with explicit Live Stream permissions can initiate live stream for vehicles that are on active trips.
