Streamline Hardware Installation with the Samsara Fleet App

With the Samsara Fleet App, installers can easily onboard new gateways and hardware, such as Vehicle Gateways (VGs), Asset Gateways (AGs), Asset Tags (ATs), and Dash Cams.

If you need to replace a previously installed gateway, refer to the appropriate topic for your scenario:

• Replace a Vehicle Gateway (VG) with the Same Model

• Replace a VG34 with a Later Model Vehicle Gateway (VG).

Before you install your devices, we suggest that you review the physical (plug and play) instructions to install Samsara hardware and accessories. When you are ready to install devices, use the app to quickly guide you through the steps needed to activate and set up one or more devices for your fleet.

To use the app to onboard devices, you must:

• Be assigned one of the following roles:

  • Admin role for the entire organization

  • Installer role, either for the entire organization or with a tag-based scope

• Have the Samsara Fleet app version 6456 (iOS) or 50.1.6456 (Android) or later installed on a supported mobile or tablet device.

To onboard a device using the app:

Install Vehicle Gateways (VGs) Using the Fleet App

1. Log into the Samsara Fleet App.

2. If you have an Installer role, tap Install Devices. Your view of the Fleet app contains only functions related to installing new devices.

   If you have an Admin role, you can find the option under the More (...) menu.

3. Tap Install new device or select an existing device for which set up is in progress.

   For devices that have partially completed set up steps, you can skip to the current step in the onboarding process. Otherwise for new devices, proceed to the next step.

4. Select the type of device you want to install and then tap Select and use the onscreen instructions.

   

5. Onboard the vehicle gateways.

   1. Identify vehicle: Use your device camera to scan the VIN or enter it manually. The VIN must be 17 alphanumeric characters and cannot include the letters I, O, or Q.

   2. Identify gateway: To quickly identify the serial number associated with the device, use the camera on your mobile device to scan the serial number barcode. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code located on the box in which the device arrived or enter the serial number manually. Tap Done when finished.

      If you manage multiple organizations, and the serial number you are attempting to register is associated with different organization than the one you are currently logged into from the Samsara Fleet App, you are prompted to log out and log in to the alternate organization.

      

   3. After you have your cable, use it to connect the VG to the vehicle, and then proceed to Verify install in the Samsara Fleet App. After the VG powers up, verify the VG is connected in the app. It can take up to 10 minutes for the app to verify power, the data connection, and GPS, and to retrieve your default configuration. Tap Continue when all checks are complete.

   4. Add vehicle details: To use a more descriptive identifier for the VG, edit the Name and then specify additional characteristics for the vehicle such as License Plate, VIN, Odometer, and any relevant Tags.

      Upload photos of the asset for ease of identification within the Samsara dashboard.

   5. (Optional) Add installation details: To upload photos of the installation, click Add photos. Installation photos can help document hardware placement, support audits, simplify troubleshooting, and serve as a reference for future installations.

   6. Tap Done when finished, and Done again to complete the VG setup.

   The app confirms the setup of your devices and displays the asset on the map view.

6. Tap the X to exit the view and return to the Install new devices screen.

7. Repeat the process to set up additional devices or tap the back arrow to return to the homepage of the app.

Install Front or Dual-Facing Cameras Using the Fleet App

1. Log into the Samsara Fleet App.

2. If you have an Installer role, tap Install Devices. Your view of the Fleet app contains only functions related to installing new devices.

   If you have an Admin role, you can find the option under the More (...) menu.

3. Tap Install new device or select an existing device for which set up is in progress.

   For devices that have partially completed set up steps, you can skip to the current step in the onboarding process. Otherwise for new devices, proceed to the next step.

4. Select the type of device you want to install and then tap Select and use the onscreen instructions.

   

5. Onboard the cameras.

   1. Select vehicle: Search for and select the vehicle to associate with the dash cam. Tap Done to confirm the pairing.

   2. Connect camera to gateway: Follow the onscreen prompts to complete and verify the connection.

   3. Configure camera positioning: Follow the on-screen prompts to configure the positioning of the road-facing lens and, for CM32 models only, the inward-facing lens.

   4. (Optional) Add installation details: To upload photos of the installation, click Add photos. Installation photos can help document hardware placement, support audits, simplify troubleshooting, and serve as a reference for future installations.

   The app confirms the setup of your devices and displays the asset on the map view.

   Tip

   For proper dash cam calibration for AI Event Detection and to ensure there are no visible obstructions, correct positioning is crucial. After you Install a Dash Cam (Standard Instructions) or install any third-party cameras and review the recommended mounting positions, Test Dash Cam Positioning.

6. Tap the X to exit the view and return to the Install new devices screen.

7. Repeat the process to set up additional devices or tap the back arrow to return to the homepage of the app.

Install Asset Tags (ATs) Using the Fleet App

1. Log into the Samsara Fleet App.

2. If you have an Installer role, tap Install Devices. Your view of the Fleet app contains only functions related to installing new devices.

   If you have an Admin role, you can find the option under the More (...) menu.

3. Tap Install new device or select an existing device for which set up is in progress.

   For devices that have partially completed set up steps, you can skip to the current step in the onboarding process. Otherwise for new devices, proceed to the next step.

4. Select the type of device you want to install and then tap Select and use the onscreen instructions.

   

5. Onboard the asset tags.

   1. Identify tag: To quickly identify the serial number associated with the device, use the camera on your mobile device to scan the serial number barcode. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code located on the box in which the device arrived or enter the serial number manually. Tap Done when finished.

      If you manage multiple organizations, and the serial number you are attempting to register is associated with different organization than the one you are currently logged into from the Samsara Fleet App, you are prompted to log out and log in to the alternate organization.

      

   2. Select asset type: Assign the appropriate asset type (Unpowered Asset or Trailer) to enable the relevant workflows.

   3. Add asset details:

      • (Recommended) Edit the Name.

        When you first add a device, Samsara identifies it by its serial number. To simplify management, rename the device with the asset name. This will help you associate the AT11 with its attached asset, making it easier to locate and identify in the dashboard.

      • Specify additional characteristics for the associated asset including VIN, Asset Serial Number, and any relevant Tags.

      • Upload photos of the asset for ease of identification within the Samsara dashboard.

Install Asset Gateways (AGs) Using the Fleet App

1. Log into the Samsara Fleet App.

   2. Select Asset Type:

      • AG26/AG46P/AG52/AG53: Trailer, Powered Equipment, or Reefer

      • AG46/AG51: Unpowered Asset or Trailer

      Tip

      To optimize asset tracking and enable asset-specific settings, you can change the asset category in the device settings at any time without losing data.

   3. Verify installation:

      • AG26/AG46P: Connect the asset to power. The device LED turns solid green with a successful connection.

      • AG45/AG46: Ensure you have a cellular signal. Use the Samsara pin to press the pin button on the AG for 1-4 seconds or until the device LED displays a single green blink.

      • AG51: Ensure the device is located in area with good cellular reception with a clear view of the sky. For setup recommendations and a detailed workflow, see Unpowered Asset Gateway (AG) Installations.

      • AG52 and AG53: Ensure the device is located in area with good cellular reception with a clear view of the sky. For setup recommendations and a detailed workflow, see AG52/AG53 Device Setup.

      The AG LED displays a solid green light after successful connection with the Samsara dashboard. It can take up to 30 minutes for the app to verify power, verify the data connection, and to retrieve your default configuration. Verify the AG is connected in the app and tap Continue when all checks are complete.

   4. Add asset details: If you want to use a more descriptive identifier for the AG, edit the Name and then specify additional characteristics for the asset including License Plate, Odometer, Engine Hours (Equipment installation only), and any relevant Tags. Tap Done when complete.

      Upload photos of the asset for ease of identification within the Samsara dashboard.

   5. (Optional) Add installation details: To upload photos of the installation, click Add photos. Installation photos can help document hardware placement, support audits, simplify troubleshooting, and serve as a reference for future installations.

   The app confirms the setup of your devices and displays the asset on the map view.

6. Tap the X to exit the view and return to the Install new devices screen.

7. Repeat the process to set up additional devices or tap the back arrow to return to the homepage of the app.

Install Environmental Monitor Sensors Using the Fleet App

1. Log into the Samsara Fleet App.

2. If you have an Installer role, tap Install Devices. Your view of the Fleet app contains only functions related to installing new devices.

   If you have an Admin role, you can find the option under the More (...) menu.

3. Tap Install new device or select an existing device for which set up is in progress.

   For devices that have partially completed set up steps, you can skip to the current step in the onboarding process. Otherwise for new devices, proceed to the next step.

4. Select the type of device you want to install and then tap Select and use the onscreen instructions.

   

5. Onboard the environmental monitor sensors.

   1. Identify sensor: To quickly identify the serial number associated with the device, use the camera on your mobile device to scan the serial number barcode. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code located on the box in which the device arrived or enter the serial number manually. Tap Done when finished.

      If you manage multiple organizations, and the serial number you are attempting to register is associated with different organization than the one you are currently logged into from the Samsara Fleet App, you are prompted to log out and log in to the alternate organization.

      

   2. Verify installation: The device LED displays a solid green light after the EM connects and the Fleet App automatically updates to Complete status. It can take up to 10 minutes for the app to verify power, verify the data connection, and to retrieve your default configuration.

   3. Edit sensor details: If you want to use a more descriptive identifier for the EM, edit the Sensor name and then specify additional characteristics for the device including the sensor Position , Pair Sensor to a nearby gateway, and any relevant Tags. Tap Done when complete.

   4. (Optional) Add installation details: To upload photos of the installation, click Add photos. Installation photos can help document hardware placement, support audits, simplify troubleshooting, and serve as a reference for future installations.

   The app confirms the setup of your devices and displays the asset on the map view.

6. Tap the X to exit the view and return to the Install new devices screen.
