Driver coaching promotes safer and more efficient driving habits by providing targeted feedback. Managers or supervisors (coaches) can guide drivers to recognize and correct risky behaviors—such as harsh braking, idling, or Hours of Service (HOS) violations—to prevent future incidents. Events can be sent to coaching directly from the Samsara dashboard.
You can manage every stage of the coaching process—from triage to reporting—using the following actions:
-
Sending Events to Coaching: Route safety, idling, or HOS violation events into the coaching queue
-
Event Triage from Coaching: Prioritize and review upcoming coaching sessions from the coaching queue
-
Completed Coaching Sessions: Review historical coaching data and session details
-
Driver Coaching Management Reports: Track coaching effectiveness and timeliness
For the event to display in Coaching (Safety () > Coaching ), a driver must first be assigned to the event either by administrator or driver manual assignment. Safety events can also be assigned by automatic assignment, such as facial recognition or API.
The following event types can be sent to Coaching:
-
Safety Events: Send safety-related incidents, such as harsh braking or speeding, from the Safety Inbox to Coaching.
Tip
By default, triage activities like assigning a coach and initiating coaching are manual. To automatically send certain event types to the Coaching queue with a
Needs Coachingstatus, you can Automatically Safety Send Events to Coaching. The assigned coach can then review and coach the driver on the behavior. -
HOS Violation Events: Send HOS violations from the Hours of Service Violations Report to Coaching to address non-compliant driving behaviors.
-
Idling Events: Send idling events from the Idling Report to Coaching to help reduce fuel waste and improve operational performance.
After an event is detected, assigned to a driver, and sent to Coaching, the driver and the behavior to coach will display on the Upcoming report (Safety () > Coaching > Upcoming). Only events with assigned drivers populate in the Coaching reports.
To narrow the scope of the drivers in the Upcoming report, you can use the filters to display specific behavior types, such as Idling or Crash events, or to display drivers with assigned tags or coaches.
Assign a coach to manually designate a coach to a driver for the current behavior and for all future behavior assignments for that driver. When the coach is ready to start a session with a driver, the coach selects Coach to begin a coaching session.
